open source behind this site

what we have used to develop mutxiko

This website has been developed based on a set of open source tools that we present here:

Debian:    http://www.debian.org

Any project based on free software should have Linux behind (or any of the other family members like FreeBSD). Why Debian then? Because it is a project with strong roots into Free Software and because even though the updates are quite slow, "good things come to those who wait". For our server, we have choosen the etch release. Althoug is the candidate one, it is quite stable.

Apache:   http://www.apache.org

Number 1 in web servers, why choose anything different from apache ? Behind it, there is a very strong team plus the documentation available on the net is simply gigantic. We are currently at version 2.0

Plone:     http://www.plone.org

Among all the CMS (Content Management Softwarea) available on the open source world, we choosed Plone because it is the best adapted to multilingual websites. Other options like Joomla were analyzed as well, but finally we sticked to Plone. Managing it is quite user friendly and does not require long hours to develop. We are using Plone 2.1.3, although 2.5 is already available, photo albums are not supported yet and it will take time before we upgrade.

Gimp:    http://www.gimp.org

We have used the Gimp to create our logo. It is extremely powerful when it comes to image development and it is even better that many commercial software.
